“Halftime” is a term for a period in life that was coined by Bob Buford, author of the best-selling book by the same title. It refers to the stage that many people reach (usually somewhere mid-life) where they become more aware of their life, where it is going and where they want it to change.
It is a time when (despite and often following success) frustration and emptiness motivate people to start asking the hard questions and seek more life-purpose. It is birthed out of the desire to leave a legacy and to make a difference.
Last year, 868,000 people in the UK turned 50; that's 32,000 people more than in 2010. With the over-50s age group increasing so rapidly – according to the Office of National Statistics, someone in the UK turns 50 every 40 seconds.
In America, more than 12,000 people turn 50 each day, and a Harvard-Met Life study shows that more than half of these individuals want more meaning and significance in the second half. But this is still a very new phenomenon.
