Courage!
In the last 3 weeks I have taken on many new Halftime coaching clients and the freshness of those conversations has reinforced in my mind a key ingredient required to transition (transform?) from success to significance: Courage.
In this blog we’ve been discussing the process for discovering and embracing God’s purpose for your life: CORE (your passions and talents), CAPACITY (having margin in your calendar, finances and spiritual abundance) and CONTEXT (where you’ll make a difference.) A tried-and-true model to be sure, but a little “clinical,” if you know what I mean.
The point of this blog is to not have a clinic on how to help clients who are in Halftime, but to discover your own life purpose – to build a life of impact and joy and balance for yourself -- so that you can, with full authenticity, guide clients to do the same later on.
The notion of courage doesn’t fit a formula when you’re personally experiencing the transformative journey of changing your paradigm from success/self-preservation to service/love of others. Obviously, having courage correlates back to CAPACITY and spiritual overflow and faith that God is truly a God of provision (John 10:10). Scripture also says that “Perfect love expels all fear” (1John 4:18). That’s edifying for sure, but ultimately the person going through Halftime has to take all of this and muster up significant amounts of courage -- I mean the “fire-in-the-belly, William Wallace/Braveheart, take-a-risk-for-humanity-and-Jesus-type” of courage.
I had many sleepless nights in 2005 as I contemplated refocusing my time, talent and treasure on the notion of making a difference in the world. How can one possibly entertain that idea, and follow through on it, without the hair standing up on the back of their neck and heart starting to race?
Even the folks that I’ve seen “muscle” their way into Halftime with their financial strength, eventually face a crisis of faith that requires pure, unadulterated courage.
How about you? What’s your sense of how courage fits into the Halftime Journey?
